GOVERNMENT COMMITS TO IMPROVING POLICE SERVICE

Government says the authority remains committed to ensuring the growth and modernisation of the police establishment in the country, in order to improve service delivery to the people.

Lusaka Province Permanent Secretary Robert Kamalata states that the government is determined to upgrade and equip the police service with technologies and infrastructure to ease their operations.

Mr. Kamalata said this when he officiated at the Zambia Police Lusaka Division 2024 annual ball at the Zambia National Service (ZNS) hall in Lusaka.

He stated that government is committed to improving infrastructure through the Constituency Development Funds (CDF) not only in Lusaka province but across all provinces.

Mr Kamalata revealed that government recognises the efforts employed by the police in ensuring that crime levels are negligible in the province despite the challenges that they face in their execution of duty.

He added that it is gratifying that the police has remained equal to the task in maintaining law and order amid some challenges.

“This is not a small task that can be done by the faint hearted, but requires commitment and dedication to duty, and government watches closely and appreciates the great job you are doing”, he said.

Mr Kamalata further commended the division for recording a reduction of crime levels by 22 percent in 2024, compared to 2023.

He further commended the reserve wing for its engagement and support and noted that together with the community crime prevention units (CCPU) under the support of respective police stations, crime in communities has gradually reduced.

He further reiterated that government will continue to invest in human resource training to maximize the much needed professionalism.

He said the recent police recruitment and pass out of 590 male and 783 female officers at Police College and 498 male and 1030 female at the school of public order and maintenance in 2024 is testimony of government’s efforts to address the gender imbalance in the service.

He further stated that the promotion of 215 officers in 2024 is proof that government is committed to recognizing and rewarding good performance and thus encouraged officers to remain committed.

And Lusaka Division Commanding Officer Roy Kashimba who represented the Inspector General of Police Graphael Musamba expressed gratitude to government for its unwavering support.

Mr Kashimba said the division had received 10 new police posts in 2024 under the CDF, nine under urban setup and one under rural setup.

“We are also grateful to the President for giving us the land cruisers which have helped in our quest to combat and fight crime”, he said.

Mr Kashimba reaffirmed that the division will continue to strive for excellence to fulfil its mandate of ensuring law and order continues to prevail in the communities.

He further thanked the reserve wing for its support and commitment towards the mandate of the police.

Meanwhile Organising Committee Chairperson Senior superintendent Wenceslaus Makasa said the occasion does not just represent the success achieved but provides an opportunity to strengthen the bonds among various stakeholders.
