THE Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has called for law and order during the forthcoming by-elections in Petauke District, Eastern Province.
Commission Chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis says the ECZ and other stakeholders are focused on the upcoming by-elections and activities leading up to the polls.
Ms Zaloumis has stressed the importance of conducting the nominations scheduled for Tuesday, January 7, 2025, in a peaceful and fair manner.
Speaking during a stakeholders meeting in Petauke , the ECZ Chairperson noted that elections are a cornerstone of democracy and should be held in a free and fair environment.
“The rule of law and the rights of our people are the most important aspects, as we want to hold free and fair elections,” she said.
Ms. Zaloumis advised the police in the area not to relent in their duty to ensure incident-free elections and zero violence.
“Elections are a cornerstone of democracy, and they must be conducted fairly, peacefully, and transparently,” she said.
And Commissioner, Major General (Rtd) Vincent Mukunga, affirmed that the police are knowledgeable about their duties and responsibilities.
Maj. Gen Mukunga noted that the uniformed personnel are well-disciplined, and any wrong actions by them during the nominations and campaigns would send a negative message about the Electoral Commission of Zambia.
However, Major Gen Mukunga emphasised that the public must feel safe and that the environment must be conducive for citizens to confidently wake up and cast their votes.
“Ensure that the public feels safe to wake up and go and vote, as well as ensuring the safety of electoral staff, materials, and the media,” he said.
