MOTHER, DAUGHTER DROWN IN KATOZI STREAM

A mother and her daughter have drowned in Katozi stream in Nakonde District of Muchinga Province. 

Tamara Nakawala, 35, and her 15-year-old daughter Brenda Nambeya met their fate in the Katozi stream, which burst its banks following a heavy downpour.

According to a Police report obtained by ZANIS in Nakonde, the 35-year-old mother went to the stream with her two daughters, Favour and Brenda, to wash clothes. But when it started raining the trio sought shelter under a nearby culvert bridge.

According to the police report, while under the bridge, a strong water current swept Tamara Nakawala and Brenda Nambeya away, dragging them down the stream while Favour Nambeya, managed to pull herself out of the water and ran to seek help.

Upon receiving the information, police officers and a team from the Nakonde Fire Brigade rushed to the scene and joined community members in the search for the victims. 

After an extensive search, the two bodies were found trapped in tree branches along the stream, 2 kilometers from the accident scene.

The bodies have since been retrieved and taken to Nakonde Urban Clinic Mortuary awaiting postmortem.
