OVER 3000 people in Siavonga District, Southern Province, have benefited from the Cash for Work programme since its inception in August 2024.

Siavonga Town Council Public Relations Officer Veronica Katongo shares this in a press release made available to ZANIS today on the progress of the Cash for Work programme in Siavonga.

Ms Katongo discloses that participants have been engaged to undertake various public works such as unblocking of drainages, installation of culverts and vegetation control.

Others are road maintenance, environmental cleaning, molding of bricks among other activities.

She stated that participants are being paid K600 after 10 days for their labour as a way of ensuring steady income at household level and also contributing to the betterment of the district.

Ms Katongo explained that the local authority will continue to prioritise the inclusion of vulnerable groups such as women, youths and persons with disabilities.

The Public Relations Officer said the initiative has created not only jobs but also helped in empowering locals to participate in developmental activities within their communities.

” The local authority has engaged over 3,000 residents and currently, we are in Kariba Ward, cleaning all the public places which include markets and hospitals, road repairs in Mutuba and Manchanvwa. Lake Shore Wards are currently in progress, with additional work planned for the Kaleya zone in Kariba ward,” Ms Katongo revealed.

She said the next phase will focus on addressing waste management and water reticulation development.

Ms Katongo said the local authority is urging eligible residents in the district between the ages of 18 to 60 who are not in any form of employment to register and participate in the programme within their wards.

” Siavonga Town Council is proud of the progress made so far and remains committed to the success of this initiative. We urge all eligible residents to take full advantage of this opportunity which is aimed at supporting household food security while contributing to the development of Siavonga,” she noted.

The Government through the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development is implementing the Cash for Work programme that aims to provide immediate economic opportunities to people while enhancing community development, poverty alleviation and social inclusion.
