A woman of Mufulira District and her two children have been left hospitalised following an alleged murder-suicide attempt.
Beatrice Phiri, of unknown house number in Mokambo Township of Mufulira District allegedly attempted to commit suicide by taking doom.
She also administered it to her two children both aged 7.
Zambia Police Copperbelt Commanding Officer, Peacewell Mweemba confirmed the development to ZANIS.
Mr Mweemba disclosed that this followed Ms Phiri’s failure to pay an 11,000 Kwacha debt.
He explained that Ms Phiri worked as a bar lady in the Mokambo area where the bar owner recently conducted a stock take and discovered a shortage of 11,000 Kwacha.
Mr Mweemba said the bar owner then asked Ms Phiri to pay back the money, which she failed to raise.
He said between 23:00 hours on 6th January, 2025 and 10:00 hours on 7th January, 2025 Ms Phiri allegedly mixed doom and two soft drinks which she drank and also gave to her two children.
Mr Mweemba explained that the three were then rushed to Ronald Ross General Hospital where they were admitted.
He stated that the mother and her son are in a stable condition, while the daughter was transferred to Kitwe Teaching Hospital where she is receiving treatment.
