BETTING INDUCED DEATHS WORRY HEALTH EXPERTS

MINISTRY of Health Mental Health Specialist Gabriel Lungu has expressed concern with increasing numbers of people committing suicide after losing huge amounts of money in betting.

Mr Lungu, notes that a number of people in communities have been trapped in the game and end up getting disappointed when they lose, resulting in taking their own lives.

In an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka today, Mr Lungu emphasised the need to address the issue of responsible content dissemination to the public, particularly in this era of social media.

He noted that most people young and old get enticed with news on social media about people winning a lot of money through betting and this prompts them to try it out.

“We should start addressing what content is being given to the general public, and we have seen the impact of social media, which is very effective,” he noted.

Mr Lungu advised people to reach out to trusted friends or family members when faced with challenges to get help rather than turning to gambling.

He also encouraged people that engage in gambling to seek counseling services available, especially when experiencing suicidal thoughts.

Mr Lungu underscored the need for the public to be aware of the risks associated with gambling as well as the importance of seeking help when needed.

He further highlighted the online services managed by Lifeline and Childline, which provide support and guidance.

“People should feel free to contact the numbers 116 and 933 for better solutions rather than taking their own lives,” Mr Lungu stressed.
