GOVERNMENT REFUTES HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATION CLAIMS

Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has refuted claims published by one of the Daily tabloids alleging that Zambia has been sanctioned by the United Nations (UN) for Rights violation.

Permanent Secretary in Charge of International Relations and Cooperation Etambuyu Gundersen clarified Zambia’s membership to the United Nations Human Rights Councils during a press briefing in Lusaka.

Ms Gundersen said the government notes with concern, the factually incorrect article published in the Daily Nation Newspaper Issue No. 4265 and dated Monday 13 January 2025 with the headline “UN Sanctions Zambia for Rights Violations”.

She has reassured the general public that the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has not considered nor adopted any resolution for the suspension or removal of Zambia from the Human Rights Council as Zambia is currently not holding a seat on the Council.

She also said the government remains steadfast to its human rights commitments both under domestic and international law and continues to cooperate with the independent human rights experts of the Council who report and advise on country situations or thematic issues in all parts of the world.

She further disclosed that the Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Opinion and Expression is expected in the Country on January 19, 2025, which demonstrates the government’s commitment to transparency and the promotion and protection of human rights.

The PS guided that while freedom of expression is a constitutional right, it is not guaranteed in absolute terms but must be exercised within the limits and confines of the law.

Ms Gundersen also implored Journalists to adhere to ethical reporting if the watchdog role of the press is to continue to retain its importance as the fourth estate in the preservation of democracy.
