2000 HOUSEHOLDS IN CHIPILI BENEFIT FROM 2024 WETLAND CROPPING

GOVERNMENT has expressed satisfaction with the crop yields from farmers who received farming inputs under the Emergency Wetland Cropping in September 2024 in Chipili district.

Over 2000 households in Chipili District received inputs under the Emergency Wetland Cropping sub-program of the Food Security Pack (FSP) to venture into winter crop production.

District Administrative Officer, Katele Lengwe says households with access to wetlands and sustainable water sources to facilitate irrigation were provided with maize and vegetable seeds and fertilisers to venture into winter maize and vegetable gardens.

ZANIS reports that Mr Katele said this when he inspected some crop fields where some farmers have already started harvesting and selling the crop that include maize and vegetables.

The wetland cropping initiative is aimed at enhancing beneficiary household’s food security and incomes through agribusiness activities.

“I’m impressed with this development, this is so encouraging. I urge all beneficiary farmers to learn from these farmers who used various means as water source and have managed to harvest,” Mr Katele said.

And District Community Development Officer, Ethel Ndatoya explained that farmers were provided with a 50 kg bag of D Compound, one by 50 kg bag of Urea and 10 kg bag of maize seed adding that from the inputs each farmer managed to cultivate a minimum of one Lima.

Meanwhile, beneficiary farmers are elated following a successful crop harvest thanking government for the support.

Speaking on behalf of other beneficiaries, Christopher Musonda, stated that most families now have asured household food security and raised incomes to sustain their livelihoods.

“With the little money from the sale of maize and vegetables I was able to buy books and uniforms for my children to go to school.. we really thank government for this,” Mr Musonda said.
