The government has released over K1.9 million to Kaoma Town Council for the cash for work programme to significantly support communities affected by drought.
ZANIS reports that Kaoma Public Relations Officer Mike Daka says the money will benefit 5,560 direct beneficiaries who were recruited in September and are expected to receive their funds this week.
He said that the money is for both Kaoma Central and Mangango Constituencies.
The PR Officer explained that the cash for work programme is a government initiative designed to provide livelihood support to communities struggling with hunger due to drought that affected farming during 2023/2024.
He noted that over 33,360 households are expected to benefit from this six-month programme across the district.
Mr Daka further confirmed that the cash for work programme offers temporary employment to individuals and families in need, focusing on community projects such as disaster preparedness, environmental conservation and infrastructure repair.
He also explained that participants receive cash payments in exchange for their work, helping them afford essential needs like food and clothing.
He added that individuals who are eligible for the programme are those that are not benefiting in any of the social cash programmes.
