GOVERNMENT has come to the plight of the 55 households in Lusaka’s Raphael Chota Ward in Mandevu Constituency, whose houses have been affected by flash floods.
Lusaka District Commissioner Rosa Zulu says the relief aid, consisting of tents, food, clothing and beddings is just a temporary arrangement to safeguard the affected families.
Ms Zulu said the government is concerned about the situation and will do its best to ensure that their lives are comfortable through alternative solutions.
ZANIS reports that the District Commissioner was speaking when she addressed the affected households in the company of the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU), Lusaka Integrated Waste Management Company, Lusaka City Council and Fire Brigade.
“During this time of displacement in the communities, we need to work together to find solutions as a team and not just wait for the government to intervene,” she said.
Ms Zulu clarified that members of the public that feel touched by the situation and are willing to donate a few relief items are free to do so through her office.
Mandevu Member of Parliament Christopher Shakafuswa thanked the government for the relief items that came through at short notice.
“Indeed President Hakainde Hichilema has a heart for the people and as Mandevu MP I am very grateful to his excellence for the swift response that has come through for my people in my constituency,” appreciated Mr Shakafuswa.
Meanwhile, Emeldah Kawambala, one of the affected residents, appreciated the government for the gesture, while Alex Siwenga, another affected resident, requested the government to work on the drainage systems in the area.
