CONSTRUCTION OF 60 DAMS COUNTRYWIDE UNDERWAY

GOVERNMENT is constructing 60 dams at an estimated cost of K500 Billion countrywide to boost rainwater harvesting and improve water management nationwide.

Minister of Water Development and Sanitation, Collins Nzovu, has announced that the construction of the dams will be completed within three years.

He says the project will prioritise the most drought hit areas among them Lusaka, Eastern, Southern and Central provinces.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lusaka, Mr Nzovu urged the Water Resources Management Authority (WARMA) to develop a strategic plan to implement measures that enhance the Government’s water security and drive economic growth.

Mr Nzovu also tasked WARMA with ensuring compliance with regulatory standards during the construction of the dams to meet all required regulations.

He called on the Authority to implement President Hakainde Hichilema’s directive to reduce the water permitting process from three months to 30 days to facilitate a faster implementation of the project.

The Minister also directed the Authority to stop encroachment on water sources by prohibiting unauthorised activities within protected areas.
