Media Network on Child Rights Development (MNCRD) has commended the media for its efforts in involving children in media related activities.
MNCRD Executive Director, Henry Kabwe, says the media has made significant strides in moving beyond having children read news to engaging them in producing various programs.
Mr Kabwe notes that this development is commendable despite the need for further improvement.
Speaking in an interview with ZANIS, Mr Kabwe said more needs to be done to incorporate children in content creation.
“The media no longer just patronises children by having them read news. We now see them actively participating in production, which is a positive development. However, more needs to be done to involve children in the collection and creation of content,” Mr Kabwe said.
He has since called on media houses to establish guiding policies that safeguard children’s rights, especially when reporting sensitive issues.
Mr Kabwe further urged media platforms to focus on positive stories about children, that include children’s achievements in education, sports, plus innovation.
“We need to highlight stories of children excelling in various fields and even include statistics from youth sports teams. This will help create child community champions who can inspire their peers and advocate for their rights,” he added.
As International Children’s Broadcasting Day approaches next Month, Mr Kabwe has since called on all media houses to continue investing in children’s media initiatives, noting that such efforts are essential for national development as well as the empowerment of future leaders.
