The global media organisations participating in this year’s 6th World Media Summit (WMS) have been urged to embrace Artificial intelligence (AI) and challenge the technology’s fake news and misinformation by adhering to professional news reporting.
Xinhua News Agency president Fu Hua made the remarks when he addressed participants at the 6th World Media Summit, which has opened in Xinjiang in China today.
ZANIS reports from Xinjiang in China that Mr Hua said the media should enhance the use of AI while promoting and observing ethical news reporting without biasness.
“We must embrace AI and sustain it for development purposes. The technology steers media development which has become a critical issue in today’s world,’’ Mr Hua explained.
The Xinhua News Agency president reminded media participants to remain professional and objective in news reporting through strengthened journalism ethics.
Mr Hua pointed out that while using AI, the media should also endeavour to promote and to build a safe environment for all.
He added that through global media collaborative partnerships, exchange programmes and the use of AI, Xinhua News Agency remains relevant in today’s changing world.
Earlier, Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Regional Committee Ma Xingrui, who is also member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, described the World Media Summit as a new bridge for enhanced exchange programmes and strengthened cooperation between the media and Xinjiang city in China.
Mr Xingrui explained that the economic development and growth in China’s Xinjiang city cannot be overemphasised as the media has played a key role in improving the well-being of its citizens.
Meanwhile, China’s Energy lnvestment Corporation Director of Executive Board Wang Min recognised the advent of AI as an attribution to the transformation taking place in the media industry.
Mr Min has cited that through media integration, the world will be informed of developments taking place in the energy sector.
‘’Enabling energy companies to engage more on interactions and dialogue with the media, we shall provide information on energy to ensure maximum publicity of the sector,” he narrated.
Among other media participants that made presentations include Reuters and Al Jazeera.
Media representatives from over 200 mainstream organisations, government departments, and other institutions including the United Nations are participating.
Xinhua News Agency is co-hosting the WMS in collaboration with the Peoples Government of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
The WMS, a gathering of world media leaders, was established in 2009 by Xinhua News Agency, the Associated Press, Reuters, TASS, and Kyodo News.

This year’s WMS theme is ‘’Artificial Intelligence (Al) and Media Transformation’’.
