Lusaka Province Deputy Permanent Secretary Alex Mapushi says effective management of public waste can contribute to the generation of income for households.
Mr Mapushi explained that households can generate financial resources by recycling waste into viable products that can be sold to the public.
Mr. Mapushi has since called for a deliberate move by the necessary stakeholders to educate the public on the importance of waste management.
ZANIS reports that Mr Mapushi was speaking at the Productive Usage of Environmental Waste programme Project Launch, a USAID funded initiative, initiated by Lusaka Integrated Solid Waste Management Company and non-governmental Organisation Reach All.
The programme aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the waste sector by promoting climate friendly practices that can generate financial resources for citizens.
The Deputy Permanent Secretary said there is a need for mindset change in relation to waste management and taking care of the environment.
And USAID has handed over 1.3 million kwacha towards the implementation of the programme.
USAID Economic Development, Environment and Energy Team Lead, Catherine Tembo said recycling organic and inorganic wastes can be a catalyst for development.
And LISWMC Interim Chief Executive Officer, Imuwana Mwanamwalye said waste management is critical especially as the country was approaching the rainy season.
