Politicians urged to prioritise the country’s peace and unity

Freedom Fighters Association Central Province Chairperson Richard Chella says as the country commemorates its 60th Independence on October 24 this year , politicians must  promote love and unity for continued relative peace.

Mr. Chella says every politician is obliged to safeguard the country’s political stability through promotion of love and unity in their respective party structures and communities.

In an interview with ZANIS ,  the Kabwe based Freedom fighter stressed that by promoting peace and unity in the country, politicians will honour both surviving and fallen freedom fighters.

“As the country celebrates its 60th Independence this month, it is important for political party leaders to promote unity in appreciation of the sacrifices our late founding Republican President Kennedy Kaunda and his colleagues made during the liberation struggle,” he said.

Mr Chella said  as freedom fighters will always promote national unity, there was need to inculcate the spirit of patriotism among citizens.

The freedom fighter also advised young people to understand the country’s political history to appreciate the sacrifices freedom fighters made during the liberation struggle.

He lamented that  a number of people lost their lives during the liberation struggle while many others were wounded.

“It wasn’t easy to attain this freedom we are enjoying today,” Mr Chella said.

He added that it is also important for young people to take keen interest in knowing the country’s political history to share the knowledge with future generations, noting that young people are often used as tools of violence.

Mr Chella further called on Zambians across to participate in this year’s Independence celebrations.

This year’s 60th independence anniversary will be held under the theme: ” 60 years strong: Honouring our heritage, embracing the future.”
