Government has commended the Bio-Carbon Partners (BCP) for making strides in preserving forest resources in Lukulu district in an effort to mitigate climate change.
Lukulu District Commissioner, Kelly Kapaku says government has continued to engage stakeholders who bring on board knowledge and expertise that serves to further government programmes.
He explained that Lukulu district has five community forest management groups that are currently being trained on leadership development, planning, budgeting, reporting and financial management reporting.
ZANIS reports that Mr Kapaku who officiated at the training meeting, said that community forest management has been included in the Forest Act no. 4 of 2015 in an effort to involve and empower communities in line with the decentralization policy.
He noted that rapid loss of forest leads to adverse effects of climate change whose impacts are evident to everyone in the society.
“Government has continued to engage stakeholders such as BCP who bring on board knowledge and expertise that serves to further government efforts of promoting development through sustainable natural resource management and forest conservation,” Mr. Kapaku said.
Meanwhile, Western Principal Forestry Officer, Mercy Kandulu mentioned that the orientation was necessary and important so that the groups understand their role and responsibilities as lead groups.
“We have explained to them what the policy requires them to do, they have also been trained in leadership development, planning financial management reporting among others, which are beneficial to them,” Ms. Kandulu said.
