Vice President Mutale Nalumango is tomorrow expected in Mumbwe district in Central Province, where she is scheduled to visit families of the 10 illegal miners who died in Lwili mine in Nangoma area.
Central Province Permanent Secretary Milner Mwanakampwe says the Vice President is scheduled to land in Mumbwa at 10:00 hours after which she will commiserate with the bereaved families.
ZANIS reports that Dr Mwanakampwe revealed that Mrs Nalumango is scheduled to return to Lusaka later in the afternoon.
And Dr Mwanakampwe has announced that six of the mine accident victims have been discharged from the hospital.
He stated that the actual number of the people who were underground has still not been ascertained though testimonies from some of the survivors indicate that there were 15 to 20 illegal miners.
The Central Province Permanent secretary stated that it is unfortunate that the illegal miners did not take heed when the mine was closed but instead continued to mine illegally leading to the death of the 10.
“The mine was closed down 13 days ago due to it not being safe for excavation without following laid down safety procedures by the Ministry of Mines,” he said.
Dr Mwanakampwe noted that it is unfortunate that people did not heed to the safety guidelines, which led to the curving in of the mine, killing 10 while injuring 6.
He also advised the police to enforce the law, and ensure that the community heeds to the laid down directives.
“They are supposed make sure that illegal mining activities are curtailed,” he said.
