Vice President Mutale Nalumango says the Government will continue to promote peace and unity that the gallant men and women fought for during the struggle for independence in 1964.
Ms Nalumango has since urged all well- meaning Zambians to remain peaceful and promote love among themselves as mother Zambia marks 60 years of independence.
ZANIS reports that speaking during the hoisting of the flag at the showgrounds in a speech read on her behalf by Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Jack Mwiimbu, Ms Nalumango reiterated the need for Zambians to remain united as Zambia marks 60 years.
“Independence Day Commemorations should always make us realise the importance of unity exhibited by the patriotism of our freedom fighters, let the One Zambia One Nation motto continue to be guiding us,” she said.
Ms Nalumango urged Zambians to continue respecting the heroes and heroines who sacrificed their lives to liberate the country from colonial rule.
She reaffirmed the need to safeguard the peace and unity as the nation toasts 60 years of independence since it attained independence.
The Vice President also encouraged Zambians to participate in the economic transformation of the country during the environmental and social challenges that have affected the nation.
“Our national flag is one of Zambia’s symbols of national identity, therefore we must all understand the meaning of the colours on it so that we can pass over the knowledge to the next generations,” she said.
Lusaka Province Minister Sheal Mulyata also reiterated the importance of preserving peace and unity by Zambians during the diamond jubilee celebrations.
This year’s 60th independence theme is 60 years strong, honouring our heritage, embracing our future.
