Government says the celebration of 60 years of Zambia’s independence is incomplete without recognising the significant role that senior citizens played in the liberation struggle.
Mwansabombwe District Commissioner Rosemary Mwiche says it is important to recognise the commitment the gallant men and women played in the liberation struggle.
Ms. Mwiche said this in a speech read on her behalf by the District Administrative Officer Linety Mbozwa during this year’s Independence Day celebration held at DON BOSCO grounds under the theme:” 60 years strong, honouring our heritage, embracing our future.”
” Despite the country’s diverse culture, the gallant men and women worked together, as one, for the good of the people, which led to the liberation of the nation and this should be an important and constant reminder of the reason Zambians should continue to uphold the one Zambia, one nation motto, ” she said.
She added that the vision and foresight that Zambia’s freedom fighters had was to see that this nation was emancipated from colonial rule which paved the way for current and future generations to enjoy.
The District Commissioner used the occasion to disclose that the district has received its equal share of government’s support through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) amounting to K 28.7 million, so far.
The local authority has thus provided grants, loans, community empowerment and bursaries to the community.
Meanwhile, Town Council Chairperson Terrioh Chungu said Mwansabombwe district has witnessed the impact of the increased Constituency Development Fund (CDF).
Mr. Chungu said CDF has seen significant progress in economic growth and empowerment programmes to the local people.
He said the increased CDF has resulted in the empowerment of the local people and support entrepreneurs and skills development.
And speaking on behalf of freedom fighters, District Freedom Fighters Association Secretary Samuel Bupe thanked all former presidents and the current president Dr. Hakainde Hichilema for making Zambia a beacon of peace in Africa.
Mr. Bupe has since implored all Zambians to remain united regardless of their political affiliation so that the country can continue to enjoy peace.
