Minister of Health, Elijah Muchima has refuted media allegations that the country has recorded a cholera case in Kanyama
Compound in Lusaka District.
Dr Muchima says that his ministry and health institutions are on high alert and treating every diarrhea case as a cholera case subject to investigation.
He added that his ministry is also working with its stakeholders in promoting the Make Zambia Clean and Healthy Campaign and the Cash for Work program to
unblock drains and clean up cities.
Dr Muchima added that the Ministry of Health is working with Local Authorities to intensify inspections of food and drinking premises.
“All health facilities have been instructed to keep stocks of drugs and medical supplies to manage the first 50 cases of cholera while the district stores for at least 200 patients,” said Dr Muchima.
Meanwhile, World Health Organisation (WHO) Country Representative, Nathan Bakyaita disclosed that WHO has a meeting in Kabwe to identify priority areas for
multi sectoral interventions.
Dr Bakyaita said that he is looking forward to a report from the meeting that will provide justification for donors of vaccines.
He added that vaccines are additional interventions and that WHO recommends two doses of cholera vaccines for protection during a period of not more than five years.
