A storm blows off Lwenge school classroom block

A Hailstorm has blown off the roof of a one-by-two classroom block at Lwenge Primary School in Lupososhi District in Northern Province.

The incident happened on Tuesday around 14 hours following a heavy downpour recorded in the area.

Lwenje School Headteacher, Marjorie Nampanzye, confirmed the development to ZANIS in an interview today.

Ms Nampanzye said the development has affected grade seven pupils who are sitting for their exams, as the classroom is the one the school is using to conduct exams.

She explained that the tragedy has added more stress to the already existing classroom crisis the school is has been facing.

She said the school had only four classes against the expected ten.

“The blowing off of this structure does not only leave us vulnerable during this rainy season but also stressed because of our pupils who are writing their grade seven exams”, Ms Nampanzye explained.

She has, however, stated that the school administration has so far advised the candidates in examination class to ignore what transpired and concentrate on their exams.

” Our pupils are stressed because this is the only structure we all depend on. Now that it has been destroyed, we quickly had a team to counsel them so that they do not lose focus,” she added.

The School Headteacher has since appealed to the government to construct a one-by-three classroom block in order to compensate for the high number of learners.

Meanwhile, Bernard Chishimba, who is Kampemba Ward Councillor, has called on the government to come to the aid of the school, which he said has been calling for help since last year, when the other structure collapsed.

“I’m appealing to the government to look into this matter with the seriousness it deserves. In 2023 we had another structure that collapsed, and it is none functional, today we have the only dependent one blown off,’’ said Mr Chishimba.
