Lunte District Commissioner, Joseph Chilando has assured school authorities at Kamana and Luli Primary Schools that government will work on the blown off roofs before schools open for the first term next year.
Mr Chilando was disappointed that eight classrooms were damaged from the two schools at the onset of the rain season.
Mr Chilando led a committee under the District Disaster Management and Mitigation Committee to check on the damage at Kamana and Luli Primary schools which had their roofs blown off on Sunday.
The District Commissioner sympathized with school authorities and since assured them that government will find alternative schools for pupils to write their examinations.
ZANIS reports that five classrooms at Kamana Primary School, and three classrooms at Luli Primary School had their roofs blown off on Sunday November 10 following heavy rains that were characterized by strong winds.
“With schools remaining with only two weeks to close, we will look for alternative means so that our children write their end of term tests, and we are happy that this happened over the weekend when no pupil was within the premises,” he said.
He disclosed that government , through the disaster component under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), will quicken the rehabilitation of the affected classrooms.
“As a committee, we have recommended that this be done under the disaster component, and money should be released as soon as possible,” said Mr Chilando.
And Lunte Town Council Deputy Director of Works, Kings Chola disclosed that the local authority has since done the assessments and will come up with the Bill of Quantities to assess the amount of funds required for the rehabilitation.
“After this assessment, we will write up the necessary reporting, and once everything is done, we shall source for funds from the disaster component, to work on the classes,” he said.
