RESIDENTS of Malembeka area in Luangwa township in Kitwe district have raised concern over the increasing presence of youth gangs in the area, which they say is threatening community safety.
Some residents who spoke anonymously revealed that groups of teenagers have been engaging in disruptive activities, including attacking residents, disrespecting elders, and smoking in public spaces.
ZANIS reports that the residents stated that these incidents have sparked fear and unease among community members.
They have attributed the worsening situation to the delayed opening of a newly constructed police station in the area.
The residents called for quick opening of Malembeka Police Post, which they said is not yet operational despite being completed, calling on authorities to expedite the opening of the police station.
They also called for increased security patrols, and introduction of programmes to address the root causes of youth delinquency.
Meanwhile, Luangwa Ward Councilor, Mary Zimba confirmed the growing problem of gangs in the area.
Ms. Zimba stated that she has engaged higher authorities to address the growing security concerns.
She assured residents that she is closely monitoring the situation and expressed optimism that the matter would be resolved soon.
