GOVT. URGED TO PROVIDE INCENTIVES FOR ARTISANAL MINING

FUTUREPRENUER Executive Director, Martin Kampamba has advised government to provide incentives to Artisanal and Small Scale miners.

Futureprenuer Executive Director, Martin Kampamba  satsted that provision of incentives has the potential to transform the small scale and artisanal businesses.

In an interview with ZANIS, Mr. Kampamba disclosed that his organization is in dialogue with government for an improved regulatory framework  that will safeguard the welfare of small-scale and artisanal miners.

“One of the major things we want to see happening is that the government should provide licenses to the small-scale and artisanal miners so that they are legally recognized,” Mr. Kampamba said.

He stated that issuing licenses to artisanal and small scale miners will enable investors to consider partnering with them, thereby enabling the sector to grow.

Lack of sufficient funding is among the many challenges faced by small-scale and artisanal miners.

He said legalizing the sector will also pave way for the enhancement of safety, thereby reducing the number of deaths being recorded in the sector.

Mr. Kampamba said it is concerning that many small-scale miners have continued dying due to lack of safety at the mining sites.

Mines and Minerals minister Paul Kabuswe in his ministerial statement in Parliament recently disclosed that a geological and minerals development has been set up.

It will seek to provide geological survey, mapping and exploration, and establishment of artisanal and small-scale mining funds, among others.

According to the minister, the legislature is yet to be presented in Parliament.
