VICE President Mutale Nalumango says a successful election can only be delivered if it is underpinned by trust, integrity and active participation of various stakeholders in the electoral process of the country.
The Vice President noted that stakeholder engagement in the electoral process is critical for the successful holding of the 2026 general elections.
Speaking on behalf of the Vice President during the 2024 Zambia electoral stakeholders conference in Lusaka, Minister of Labour and Social Security Brenda Tambatamba, observed that elections are a cornerstone of democracy.
Mr Nalumango said Zambia has upheld democratic principles through peaceful elections, which have contributed to political stability.
“It is with this in mind that we have gathered here for these three days to engage in open dialogue to build consensus on key issues aimed at enhancing our electoral process,” she said.
She also commended the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) and other stakeholders for continuing to play a pivotal role in the country’s electoral process.
Ms Nalumango was particularly encouraged that the ECZ has commenced preparations for the 2026 general elections, and that in July this year, the electoral body shared the 2026 general election roadmap, outlining key activities to be undertaken.
Mrs Nalumango said government will support the ECZ to successfully implement the 2026 general elections roadmap leading to the holding of the elections in 2026.
And ECZ Chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis underscored the need for the electoral body to address the shortcomings in the electoral system before the 2026 General Elections.
Ms Zaloumis said the 2024 electoral stakeholders conference is critical for the successful holding of elections as it reflects different inputs from various sectors such as civil society organizations, academicians, church based organisations among others.
She pledged the ECZ’s commitment towards enhancing the electoral process through meetings with relevant stakeholders prior to 2026 general elections.
United Nations Resident Coordinator Beatrice Mutali said her office stands ready to partner with the Zambian government by offering technical support to ensure a successful election in 2026.
Ms Mutali has since called for the end to gender-based violence during elections and that the UN will continue to work with government in strengthening the country’s electoral system.
The 2024 Zambia electoral stakeholders conference is being held under the theme, Zambia at 60, enhancing electoral integrity of the 2026 general elections.
