HEAVY RAINS DESTROYS ROOFS AT PALANGOTO, NJEKE SCHOOLS IN LUWINGU

TWO Classroom blocks at two Primary Schools in Luwingu District in Northern Province have been destroyed by heavy rains.

Luwingu District Commissioner Chomba Chileshe confirmed the development to Zambia News and Information Services in Luwingu District and named the schools as Palangoto and Njeke Primary Schools.

Mr. Chileshe said Palangoto Primary school in Senior Chief Shimumbi and Njeke Primary School in Chief Chipalo have had their roofs blown off following a heavy downpour experienced in the area.

He further revealed that about 10 houses in Mwamona Village in chief Chipalo have their roofing sheets blown off leaving 21 members of the families without shelter.

The District commissioner has appealed to the community to support government initiatives by planting trees to stand as wind breakers in all the schools in Luwingu district

Mr. Chileshe said it is sad that trees that were planted in schools following an instruction have been stolen by people in the community.

Meanwhile Mr. Chileshe said the heavy rains have also destroyed church infrastructure in Mwamona Village in Chief Chipalo area.

He said he was happy that no life had been lost as a result of the blowing of roofs.

“The houses were destroyed because they were poorly made. Some had no ring beam and that they were made out of clay soil without cement and could not withstand the downpour,” he added.

Luwingu District is one of the districts in the Northern Province that is experiencing good rainfall since the start of November 2024.
