CONSTRUCTION OF THE MUTANDA-KASEMPA-KAOMA TO BOOST ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES-FQM

First Quantum Minerals (FQM) Country Manager, Godwin Beene says the mining company  is proud to be an investor and a technical advisor in the construction of the Mutanda -Kasempa- Kaoma road project.

Dr Beene said the project directly addresses President Hichilema’s call for increased investment in infrastructure, through the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model that minimises the financial burden on the government.

He said this in Kasempa today when he witnessed the signing of the concession agreement for the construction of the 371 kilometer Mutanda- Kasempa- Kaoma road at a cost of over US$326 million.

Dr Beene said the signing of the agreement between government and Barotse Highway Limited (BHL) marks a significant step in Zambia’s infrastructure development and its commitment to transforming the nation’s transportation network.

“For too long, this vital artery has been hampered by its predominantly gravel surface, significantly impacting the movement of goods and people, and hindering economic growth in these two  regions which are Northwestern and western provinces, this project will transform that”, He said.

Dr Beene said the mining company’s participation in the project underscores its ongoing commitment to Zambia’s development and aligns perfectly with the Government’s emphasis on PPP as a catalyst for National progress.

Dr Beene emphasises that the road will improve safety for all road users by reducing accidents and ensuring more reliable travel conditions.

“Other benefits that will come with the road are regional development, by improving transport infrastructure, the project will unlock the economic potential of North-Western and Western Provinces, stimulating growth and creating opportunities for local communities,” Dr Beene said.

Dr Beene said the project seamlessly complements other regional initiatives strengthening Zambia’s Western Corridor and improving access to vital trade routes like the Lobito Rail Corridor.

He noted that the construction and operation phases will generate significant employment opportunities, boosting local economies and providing livelihoods for Zambians.

“Another project benefit is reduced fiscal pressure, the PPP model shifts the financial risk and responsibility to the private sector, allowing the government to allocate resources more effectively. This agreement is more than a signature on a document it is a commitment to a brighter future for Zambia,” Dr Beene said.

He assured that FQM will continue to play its role as one of the biggest investors in Zambia’s development through strategic investments in key sectors of the economy.

Speaking at the same event Kasempa area Member of Parliament Brenda Tambatamba thanked the government on behalf of the local people for the huge investments coming to the area under the visionary leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema.

Ms Tambatamba said the project will open up the two provinces to both regional and International trade in various social and economic sectors.

Representing Provincial Minister Robert Lihefu, Deputy Permanent Secretary, Luckson Mulumbi said the people in the province are happy that the road is being worked on which has been their cry for so many years.

He said people in the region will continue supporting President Hichilema’s developmental agenda for the province and the country as a whole.

And in an exclusive interview with ZANIS Kasempa Town Council Chairperson Brian Kakonkanya said apart from jobs creation and contractual activities the local authority anticipates to see business growth among the locals which in turn will increase revenue base.

“Of course as a local authority we expect to see many businesses being established, a lot of patrons passing through Kasempa, and many other economic aspects, it is really going to benefit the district immensely and it is a game changer for Kasempa in terms of development,” Mr Kakonkanya said.
