Government has urged youths to desist from engaging in premarital sexual activities as it is one of the drivers of HIV/AIDS pandemic.
Chisamba District Commissioner Joel Mboyoma says youths should instead focus on attaining personal development as opposed to putting their health at risk.
He says unmarried people such as youths should practice abstinence as it is one sure way to prevent oneself from contracting HIV.
ZANIS reports that Mr Mboyoma said this during the 2024 World AIDS Day commemoration which was held under the theme: “Take the Rights Path.”
This year’s theme is a reminder that not only is the fight against AIDS a public health issue, but also a human rights issue.
“Every person deserves equal access to health services, support and the freedom to live without fear of stigma or discrimination.
” Communities are implored to advocate for their rights and the rights of others, ensuring no one is left behind in the global HIV response,” he said.
Earlier, Liteta Primary School Head Teacher Levison Kamando disclosed that the institution has incorporated HIV related topics in the curriculum.
Mr Kamando added that it’s for this reason, that learners were being educated on the preventive measures of the disease and management of those who might have contracted it from their mothers.
And Chisamba District Health Director Gideon Panja stated that the Ministry of Health has deployed four medical doctors to the district to enhance health care delivery.
Dr Panja noted that the development will go a long way in managing different health conditions in the area, among them HIV/AIDS.
Meanwhile, Precious Kaniki, a 32-year-old woman who has been living positively for 16 years, encouraged the public to take care of their health and protect themselves from contracting HIV.
Ms Kaniki urged those who are living positively to continue to take their medication so as to live productive lives.
