Government says it has this year disbursed K 31 million under Constituency Development Fund (CDF) to water utility companies throughout the country.
This is with the sole aim to mitigate the impact of the drought on water supply and sanitation services in the country.
Out of this amount, Northwestern Water and Sanitation Company received K 9 million kwacha for drilling boreholes in Kasempa and Manyinga districts.
ZANIS reports that Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation Collins Nzovu revealed this in a Ministerial statement in Parliament yesterday.
Mr. Nzovu stated that following the Presidential directive to prioritise improvement of water and sanitation service delivery in communities, the Utilities have been engaging communities and the local authorities to prioritize the said projects.
“I am pleased to report that a total of K 31 million from CDF funds have been made available to commercial utilities for them to undertake the extension of water supply and sanitation improvement projects.
“ For example, Southern Water and Sanitation Company received a total of 3.5 million kwacha to drill boreholes in Pemba, Mazabuka and Namwala and lay pipelines in Livingstone, Chirundu and Mazabuka to improve water supply in these areas,” he said.
He said K 3 million was allocated to procure and install hybrid pumps in Sioma, Shang’ombo and Lwampa Towns, respectively as well as construction of a sewage tank in Sesheke and network extension in Mwandi.
“Lusaka Water and Sanitation Company received about K 9 million to construct six Kiosks in Kanyama and laying of water pipes in Bauleni and Kabanana townships,” he said.
And the government has disbursed a further K 55 million to all the 11 commercial utilities in the country.
Mr. Nzovu said in the same statement that this is to ensure that communities continue to receive water during the drought which has affected most parts of the country.
He said each commercial utility received five million Kwacha and that North-Western Water and Sanitation has procured 500 water meters and assorted repairs to attend to water leakages in all the districts
