MINISTER of Justice Princess Kasune says Zambia has resolved to vote in favour of the moratorium against the Death Penalty at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York, United States of America.
Ms Kasune who has arrived in New York, will be depositing Zambia’s instruments for Accession to the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, with the UN Secretary General.
This is contained in a statement issued to ZANIS today by Minister of Justice, Princess Kasune.
Part of the statement reads that Zambia will be voting in favour of the Moratorium against the Death Penalty on December 17, 2024 at the UN General Assembly in New York, United States of America.
Ms Kasune noted that this is the 10th resolution of the Moratorium which has gained momentum with a majority of UN member states voting for the Moratorium.
She explained that the text of the Moratorium provides for a temporary suspension of the death penalty especially in countries where the death penalty is still law and found in the country’s statutes.
“In the case of Zambia, since President Hakainde Hichilema signed into law the abolition of the death penalty, we shall be voting for the moratorium against the death penalty because Zambia is a pro-life state,” said Ms Kasune.
