Mopani Copper Mine has shut down its Mufulira smelter following a breakdown of the oxygen plant.
In a statement issued to ZANIS, Mopani Copper Mines Public Relations Manager, Nebert Mulenga, disclosed that the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Charles Sakanya has announced the shutdown of the smelter until end of February, 2025 to facilitate maintenance works.
Mr Mulenga stated that the smelter incurred a breakdown of its oxygen plant on 21st November, 2024, necessitating maintenance works.
He said the shutdown is to facilitate the renovation, adding that the mine is doing everything possible to make sure works are completed even before the end of February, 2025.
He also assured that the mine will continue to update the public of any developments during the shutdown period.
Mr Mulenga assured that the mine will continue to engage all stakeholders throughout the refurbishment programme.
