The Lake Tanganyika Authority (LTA) Conference of Ministers has resolved to host its next conference in Zambia in 2025.
In a communique during the recently held 12th Ordinary Meeting of the Lake Tanganyika Authority (LTA) Conference of Ministers in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the four Member States namely – Burundi, DRC, Tanzania, and Zambia – unanimously agreed that Zambia should host the next meeting.
This follows an offer by the Government of the Republic of Zambia to host the Thirteenth Ordinary Meeting of the Lake Tanganyika Authority Conference of Ministers in October 2025.
According to the communique, the LTA Conference of Ministers has since welcomed the offer.
The conference further thanked the outgoing Chairperson of Ministers for the Authority, Minister of Green Economy and Environment Mike Mposha for his diligence in serving the four member countries.
The Conference of Ministers has since directed the LTA Secretariat to formally inform the Government of Tanzania about the need to identify a suitable candidate for appointment as the Executive Director.
The contract of the current Executive Director expires on 2nd March 2026, and the candidate should be presented at the 13th Ordinary Meeting of the Lake Tanganyika Authority Conference of Ministers to be held in Zambia in 2025.
The Conference also noted the progress made by Member States on the implementation of the annual fish ban on Lake Tanganyika, aimed at maintaining sustainable management of fisheries in the lake.
Mr Mposha has since handed over the LTA Conference of Ministers’ Chairmanship to DRC Minister for Fisheries and Livestock, Jean Pierre Tshimanga.
