Government has announced the death of former Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet for Finance and Economics, during the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) administration, Benjamin Mweene.
According to a statement issued by acting Secretary to the Cabinet, Siazongo Siakalenge said that Professor Mweene died at age 77 on Wednesday, December 25th, 2024, at Maina Soko Medical Centre in Lusaka, after an illness.
Mr Siakalenge described Prof. Mweene’s career in the public service as illustrious, who served as Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet from 1999 to 2002, among other portfolios.
He added that the deceased also served as Deputy Vice Chancellor at the University of Zambia, Dean of Natural Sciences, Director of Budget, Permanent Secretary for Budget and Economics Affairs and Secretary to the Treasury, prior to his appointment as Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet (FED).
“The government regrets to inform members of the public of the death of Prof. Benjamin Mweene former Secretary to the Cabinet (FED) from 1999 to 2002 and subsequently as Secretary to the Cabinet designate,” Mr Siakalnge stated.
He revealed that the funeral gathering is being held at No.215 A, Rosedale Farm along Mumbwa Road, Lusaka West in Chilanga District.
He added that the Cabinet Office is working in collaboration with the family of the late Prof. Mweene on funeral arrangements and that a detailed official funeral programme will be released once the burial arrangements are concluded.
