HEAVY RAINS LEAVE TRAIL OF DESTRUCTION IN LUNDAZI

Heavy rains, accompanied by strong winds, have left a trail of destruction in Mwase Chiefdom of Eastern province.

The rains have reaped off a roof for the  1 by 2 classroom block at Kambaza Primary School in Chilola Ward  reducing the entire  structure to rubble.

In Chimalilo Ward, a teacher’s house at Ntakalavu Primary School and a church both had their roofs blown off.

Area Councilor, Clint Mwale told ZANIS in Lundazi that about five more houses in the community have also been affected.

Mr Mwale said the affected families were reported to be squatting with relatives as the area still continues to experience heavy downpours.

Mr Mwale has called on the District Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit  (DMMU) to quickly respond to the plight of the affected families.

And DMMU district officer, Sharon Banda has assured the affected families of government support in a quickest possible time.

Ms Banda said currently, DMMU is conducting an assessment on the extent of the damage at Kambaza Primary School to ascertain the cost of repairing the roof before schools reopen.

“An assessment is going to be done today so that a Bill of Quantity is generated to have the roof worked on,” the DMMU district officer stated.

After an extended dry spell, Lundazi District has started to receive rains, characterised with strong winds causing damage to infrastructure and are expected to continue to according to the weather information.
