PETAUKE District Education Board Secretary, Masendeka Sibizwe has disclosed that government is in the process of rehabilitating about 12 schools in the district.
Ms Sibizwe says this is in order to facilitate the school facilities that were destroyed by heavy rains last year.
She noted that the work is being done in order to ensure smooth learning as schools reopen for the first term of school this year.
ZANIS reports that Ms Sibizwe said government has seen the need to improve the school infrastructure, noting that doing so is critical to the delivery of quality education.
She added that the 12 schools had their roofs blown off due to heavy winds, thereby, disrupting the normal functioning of school activities.
Ms Sibizwe explained that the government is aware of the urgent need to improve the schools infrastructure, in various areas where heavy rains caused a trail of destruction.
The DEBS further said the government remains keen to see pupils learning in a conducive environment, hence the authority’s resolve to look for resources to address the impending challenges in the education sector.
And Petauke District Commissioner, Martha Mulenga said the district is making strides to provide adequate resources to rehabilitate broken down infrastructure across all the sectors in the district.
Meanwhile, Eastern Province Minister, Peter Phiri, highlighted the need to improve the school infrastructure, especially those that were built a long time ago.
Mr Phiri noted that government remains committed to building more schools, recognizing the importance of ensuring that all children have access to education.
“We will try to make the most of available resources to address the situation,” he said.
