THE Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) has seized 33,000 litres of ethanol smuggled into Zambia, valued at K1.4 million.
In a statement issued to ZANIS, ZRA Corporate Communications Manager Oliver Nzala has revealed that the ethanol was transported from South Africa in a fuel tanker truck with registration number LF 47 RN GP.
Mr Nzala has revealed that the truck was intercepted at the Victoria Falls Border in Livingstone after intelligence reports showed that a cartel was smuggling ethanol into Zambia, claiming it was in transit to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
He said upon inspection, the truck was found empty at the Sakania border and the driver was arrested to aid in investigations.
Mr Nzala has explained that ZRA has since forfeited the truck to the state and will work in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, in order to combat smuggling and hold those involved accountable.
And Mr Nzala has added that ZRA’s mandate extends to protecting the society from proliferation of harmful products like ethanol that is used to manufacture counterfeit alcoholic drinks.
He said the authority is deeply saddened with the outcome, saying it creates unfair trade competition and poses health and safety risks to the citizenry.
He said ZRA has enhanced vigilance at the country’s border points, as part of its key measures aimed at stepping up the fight against illicit trade and counterfeits.
Mr Nzala has also called for the public alertness and prompt sharing of intelligence reports to help dismantle any such cartels in future.
