ENVIRONMENTALIST CALLS FOR CONCERTED EFFORTS IN ADDRESSING CLIMATE CHANGE

GREEN Cosmos Chief Executive Officer and Environmental Consultant Martin Mulenga has called for concerted efforts in addressing climate change matters.

Mr Mulenga says Zambians need to be Patriotic and contribute to the protection of the environment.

In an interview with ZANIS in Solwezi, he however commended President Hakainde Hichilema for giving  the country direction  through the creation of the Ministry of Green Economy and other policy directives.

“Environmental Sustainability is everyone’s responsibility and must be treated as such, it is not for the President alone or the government.

“As a country, we are good at enacting laws that are not enforced.Mr Mulenga cited the Solid Waste Management Act no.18 of 2022 which guides on how people should keep the surrounding clean and how to deal with recycling,” said Mr. Mulenga. .

The Green Cosmos Chief Executive Office added that this coupled with other laws if properly enforced can help with environmental protection.

“We have some sections in this country where people are forced to comply, eg Road Transport and Safety Agency ( RTSA) people comply, because they know the consequences” said Mr Mulenga.

Mr Mulenga called for behavior change adding that as a country, there is need to be proactive as opposed to being reactive.

He advised that the donations made during  disease outbreaks  such as  Cholera by various stakeholders should be done to prevent the disease.

“We should start thinking ahead and preventing outbreaks unlike waiting for a calamity for us to donate” said Mr Mulenga.

He however called for more stakeholders to come on board as well as more  investment in sensitization.

He explained that the environment has for a long time  suffered alot of injustice which if not addressed can lead to alot of consequences.
