KANCHIBIYA District Commissioner Chrispin Chilekwa has called for stakeholder involvement in the fight against cholera the district.
Speaking at his office during a meeting with various government officers on Wednesday, Mr Chilekwa stressed the need for vigilance and collective responsibility to maintain a cholera-free zone in Kanchibiya.
“Kanchibiya District should be a cholera-free zone; we have to make sure of that,” he said.
He has commended the establishment of two cholera isolation centers at Luchembe Mini Hospital and Mpepo Mini Hospital.
Mr. Chilekwa disclosed that preparations are underway to set up additional centers.
And Acting District Health Director, Timothy Chirwa called for stringent measures in local communities, particularly in chiefdoms, to ensure every household has proper sanitation facilities, including toilets.
Mr Chirwa also called on stakeholders to sensitise communities about avoiding cholera-prone areas.
“As a department, we are currently pushing to distribute chlorine to all communities,” he said.
Meanwhile, District Health Surveillance Officer Josephat Bwalya announced that all schools in the district would be disinfected before reopening.
“We are working tirelessly with the Department of Education to ensure that health standards are met before schools open. The safety of pupils is our priority during this period,” he said.
Mr Bwalya added that Environmental Health Technologists (EHTs) have been instructed to remain vigilant and enforce health standards at institutions such as schools, markets, and offices.
The concerted efforts by health authorities and other stakeholders are aimed at safeguarding public health and preventing the spread of cholera in Kanchibiya District.
