LUSAKA District Administrative Officer O’Neill Chiiya says his office is collaborating closely with the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) to provide relief packages to families affected by the floods.
Mr Chiiya says the District Commissioner’s Office is doing everything possible to ensure that the affected families within the city receive support from DMMU.
He explained to ZANIS in a telephone interview that the support to be rendered to the flood victims is meant to ease their challenges.
Mr Chiiya revealed that the local authority is tackling the crisis caused by flooding from multiple angles to find solutions.
“We’re looking at different areas, as the problems vary from place to place,” Mr Chiiya explained.
Meanwhile, Mr Chiiya says government has identified a number of issues that contributed to the flooding.
He cited the poor drainage as one of the contributing factors to the flooding experienced by the residents of Kabanana recently.
Mr Chiiya has implored members of the public to alert the District Commissioner’s office on time in an event of flooding.
He hinted that some of the affected families may require to be relocated to safer grounds.
“We encourage people to alert us on time whenever there is a need for us to assess the situation on the ground,” Mr Chiiya said.
Some residents of Kabanana were left stranded after the recent heavy rains which caused widespread destruction, with many homes severely damaged or destroyed.
