MINISTER of Health Elijah Muchima has called on public and private institutions across the country to adhere to the cholera measures that the government has continuously put in place.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with ZANIS at his office in Lusaka, Dr Muchima says observing hygiene is everyone’s responsibility.

He has noted the need for offices or public places such as churches, shops or offices that continuously work with people to emulate what the government is already implementing by following health measures put in place to avert cholera.

Dr Muchima, who emphasised the need to observe hygiene, says his Ministry will enhance a robust approach with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development and other line-ministries to ensure that cholera is contained.

He added that failure to adhere to such measures has negative Constitutional Act policies that may lead to punitive measures.

“The situation is not supposed to reach that far when people can just follow good hygiene practices across the country,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Bus and Taxi Owners Association President, Sydney Chewe, says the Association is currently implementing cholera preventive measures at critical points such as intercity bus terminus.

Mr Chewe noted that the Association as well as other stakeholders in collaboration with the council have taken the government’s call with keen interest in order to protect the passenger’s wellbeing.

“Bus operators are also able to regulate foods that are sold in the bus terminals to avoid the spread of cholera,” Mr Chewe said.

Meanwhile, Mr Chewe said his Association also conducts regular health monitoring as well as public awareness on cholera.

“Bus terminals as well as buses are regularly cleaned and disinfected before loading passengers on board. We also offer hand sanitisers before passengers enter the buses,” he said.
