THE Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock in Lukulu District of Western Province has embarked on a restocking programme in order to add more livestock in the district.
The district has received 104 goats which will go to eight women groups in the district under a pass on programme.
Lukulu District Commissioner, Kelly Kapaku called on farmers to put in concerted efforts to properly manage the goats.
Mr Kapaku added that this is in order to achieve the programme’s purpose of alleviating poverty at household level in the communities.
The District Commissioner said this in a speech read on his behalf by Acting District Administrative Officer, Dominic Makole, during the handover of the animals to beneficiaries.
Mr Kapaku said goats were very good to keep as they are resistant to most diseases and that they can survive the harsh environment that comes with the effects of climate change which is currently being experienced in the country.
“Goat meat serves as a good source of protein and brings about household food security. In addition, goat production has the potential to improve the living standards of farmers,” he said.
Mr Kapaku added that the government would continue to ensure that improved extension services were available to farmers to boost livestock production.
Meanwhile, Lukulu Acting District Community Development Officer, Jane Sinkala commended the government for the programme.
Ms Sinkala urged the communities to supplement government efforts by following the correct instructions outlined for the programme.
She said the department was more than ready to implement the programme and see to it that livestock in the district grew.
“The office will continue to monitor these clubs from time to time in order to ensure that they are doing the right things and also contribute positively in eradicating poverty at household level,” Ms Sinkala said.
Earlier, Lukulu District Fisheries and Livestock Coordinator, Soft Simfukwe explained that the Ministry has the responsibility to promote the production and productivity of livestock adding that each group has been allocated 13 goats for breeding purposes.
“The eight groups are from Kasheke, Kapata, Lishuwa, Mulembe, Kawaya, Chimba, Shimbamiyengo and Kandala areas,”Mr Simfukwe said.
Jackline Chinyama, representing other beneficiaries, thanked the government for the programme saying that it has come at a right time and pledged to work extra hard so that others benefit.
