The United Party for National Development (UPND) in Central Province has advised former President Edgar Lungu to save his name from attacks by retiring from active politics.
UPND Central Province Information and Publicity Secretary Freddy Khunga said Mr Lungu should not use unorthodox means such as Plan B in his pursuit for power.
Mr Khunga said the seven years Mr Lungu served as President was enough and that it is now time for him to retire from active politics.
“Mr Lungu should hang his political gloves to save his name. This call on him to retire from politics is being made out of love for him. We are not scared of him as a party but we love him,” Mr Khunga said.
He said the UPND leadership in Central Province is concerned about the path Mr Lungu has taken by engaging in active politics instead of enjoying his retirement.
Mr Khunga advised those surrounding Mr Lungu to stop misleading him that he is still popular.
He said the Constitutional Court has now put the matter of Mr Lungu’s eligibility to contest the 2026 general elections to rest.
He said Mr Lungu should respect the Constitutional Court’s verdict by retiring from active politics.
Mr Khunga said fighting to retain power through Plan B, might just end up putting the former Head of State in trouble.
“Mr Lungu has nothing to offer,” Mr Khunga said.
The Constitutional Court recently delivered a ruling that Mr Lungu is not eligible to contest the 2026 and future elections.
