MEDIA CAUTIONED

Governance and Human Rights Expert Wesley Miyanda has cautioned the media to be careful before publishing articles for public consumption.

Commenting on the recent article published by a named media house alleging that Zambia had been blacklisted by the United Nations, for Human Rights violation.

Mr Miyanda said unverified information has the potential to put the country in a bad light globally.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with ZANIS, Mr Miyanda emphasized that media houses should conduct research to ensure they come up with accurate information.

He expressed concern over the recent article that was published alleging that Zambia had been blacklisted by the UN for violation of Human Rights.

Mr Miyanda said the media, as the fourth estate, has a huge responsibility of providing truthful information to the public.

He has since advised media houses to adhere to media ethics such when reporting on matters of national interest.

Meanwhile Mr Miyanda has commended the government for efforts made in upholding the UN Human Rights conditions.

At a press briefing yesterday the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Permanent Secretary Etambuya Gundersen refuted claims that Zambia has been sanctioned by the UN for Human Rights violations.

Mrs Gundersen described the story that appeared in the Daily Nation Newspaper as false at a press briefing held at the Ministry of Information.
