PRESIDENT HICHILEMA HAPPY WITH ZAMBIA, INDIA STRENGTHENED RELATIONS

President Hakainde Hichilema has expressed gratitude to the Indian government for a long standing sound partnership with Zambia, which spans over 60 years.

The President also appreciated the Indian government’s support in the areas of health, agriculture and education, further encouraging India to continue making investments in Zambia’s said sectors.

He said the investments can be especially through the establishment of hospitals as well as manufacturing industries, in Zambia.

Mr Hichilema also underscored India’s support towards Zambia’s debt restructuring, saying the support was invaluable.

The President is optimistic that Zambia and India will continue to further their bilateral relations for the benefit of the two countries.

The President was speaking today at State House when outgoing Indian High Commissioner to Zambia Ashok Kumar paid a farewell courtesy call on him.

Mr Hichilema congratulated Mr Kumar on his new appointment as the next Ambassador of India to Belarus and wished him the very best.

Meanwhile, Mr Kumar who was also Special Representative of India to the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), appreciated Zambia’s support, cooperation and hospitality during his tenure in Zambia.

“I thank the government of Zambia for allocating 15.20 hectares of land to the India Zambia Business Council (IZBC) at the Natural Resources Development College (NRDC) campus for development of a model agricultural farm to showcase India’s best agricultural practices,” he added

Mr Kumar pointed out that the development partnership with Zambia has been an important component of the two countries bilateral relationship.

“I also take this opportunity to convey that grant proposals like the gifting of 100 solar irrigation pumps, medical equipment worth US$1 million, five fire tenders and 500 sewing and 100 embroidery machines are under active consideration of the government of India,” he added.

He further said medical equipment worth US$1 million is expected to reach Lusaka next week.

He also praised the Zambian government for its leadership, which demonstrates unwavering commitment to its citizen’s welfare and national growth.

“I am really happy that during my tenure in Zambia, both countries have seen an intensive engagement in all areas of bilateral cooperation,” he added.

Mr Kumar reiterated his government’s commitment to support Zambia in its journey of economic transformation and socio-economic development.
