DISASTER Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) National Coordinator Gabriel Pollen says government supports about 6.6 million people nationwide with relief food.

Dr Pollen states that these are people experiencing food insecurities due to the effects of the droughts.

ZANIS reports that the National Coordinator was speaking in Lusaka, at a donation of 7,400 by five kilograms, packets of rice worth over K1.8 Million Kwacha, by Huawei Technologies Limited.

He thanked Huawei Technologies Limited for the gesture stating that the donation comes at the right time when the country is again experiencing floods, another challenge that needs to be addressed.

Dr Pollen hailed the company for not only providing employment and contributing to a range of economic activities and initiatives to support government aspirations for economic growth but also engaging in corporate social responsibility activities such as food donation.

“Between now and the next harvest season the food stock will decrease to the lowest, so this is coming at the right time,” Dr Pollen said.

He also requested for more partnerships with Huawei Technologies Limited in the area of technological expertise and experience to boost the existing initiatives of enhancing early warning systems, making DMMU more effective and proactive in its operations.

Huawei Technologies Limited’s Acting Managing Director, Dylan Lyu said the gesture was part of the collective efforts to assist the government mobilise relief food for vulnerable communities in areas that were impacted by the drought last year.

Mr Lyu noted that the private sector as a cooperating partner has a responsibility to help Zambian communities.

He further commended the government through DMMU for ensuring that relief food and other forms of support reach the intended communities and extended the company’s commitment to support the humanitarian efforts.
