THE Lusaka City Council (LCC) has noted with great concern the tendency of erecting unauthorised makeshift structures, particularly along road frontages by some residents.
This concern is arising from numerous complaints received by the Local Authority regarding illegal makeshift stalls, trading activities without permits and indiscriminate waste disposal by some institutions, residents and members of the general public.
LCC Public Relations Manager, Chola Mwamba, states that these illegal activities not only contravene the city planning regulations but also obstruct pedestrian walkways, pose safety risks and create other hazards.
In a statement issued to ZANIS, Ms Mwamba indicated that to address these issues, the Council has intensified efforts to restore order, cleanliness and adherence to public health regulations in the city.
“In line with its mandate to maintain order and ensure compliance, the Council will begin the systematic removal of all illegal structures across the city,” she disclosed.
Ms Mwamba has urged all traders operating without valid permits to regularise their businesses or face enforcement actions.
She further noted that indiscriminate disposal of waste has been observed in several parts of the city, leading to unhygienic conditions that expose residents to potential disease outbreaks such as cholera and typhoid.
“Institutions, businesses and individuals found to be disposing waste irresponsibly will face strict penalties as provided for under the Public Health Act Cap 295 of the Laws of Zambia,” she stressed.
Ms Mwamba encouraged residents to cooperate with the Council by using designated waste collection points, adhering to trading regulations and reporting cases of illegal activities to make Lusaka a clean and healthier city for all.
