LUSAKA City Council has expressed concern over the dumping of solid waste in rainy water.

LCC Assistant Public Relations Manager Bulumba Nyambe says the local authority will not relent to arrest and charge residents who are in the act of dumping solid wastes in undesignated areas.

Speaking to ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka, Mr Nyambe added that perpetrators will be required to pay fifteen thousand Kwacha (K15,000) or be convicted with hard labour for a period not less than six months.

“Community members should know that dumping solid wastes in drainages, leads to the blockage of drainages and flooding of the communities,”he said.

Mr Nyambe said residents should show responsibility by subscribing to solid waste companies to ensure that the waste is collected from their residences.

“Residents think that when they drop solid waste in the drainages or running rainy water the waste will go away, no that’s creating another problem for the city,” he said.

Mr Nyambe noted that the act has contributed to disease outbreaks such as cholera.

“Let us not cause diseases to ourselves, we can prevent it by simply doing the right thing,” he said.

Mr Nyambe added that the local authority is saddened with some residents who do not want to subscribe to solid waste companies.
