MUSHROOM RELISH TURNS INTO A FAMILY TRAGEDY IN SIKONGO

Two minors have died while two others from the same family are hospitalised after eating mushrooms suspected to be poisonous.

This was after  Chikwama Kanyanga of Kaimana village in Chief Kaonga’s area of Sikongo District  reportedly arrived home on Sunday, 9th February, 2025 with mushrooms bought from Kalabo District from a visit.

Confirming the ordeal to ZANIS, Sikongo District Health Director, Kennedy Lisulo said Mr Kanyanga had the mushrooms prepared and shared with three of his male children, all aged below 12 years.

He then  later left home to find his wife who was not home the entire day.

Dr. Lisulo explained that the three little children complained of severe diarrhea to their eldest sister who sort  help from the neighbours and were rushed to Sikongo mini hospital.

Dr Lisulo said the conditions of the children however, continued worsening despite treatment and on Tuesday morning the youngest child succumbed to the suspected poison and died at the hospital.

The remaining victims were refered to Yuka mission hospital for special treatment.

However, the youngest was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

By broadcastime, the eldest amongst the three and the father were still receiving treatment at the same hospital.
