Ensure peace in upcoming by election

Kabompo District Electoral Officer Anthony Kalunga has called on all election stakeholders to ensure that a peaceful by-election is conducted in Chikenge ward.

Mr. Kalunga said that a peaceful and credible election can be ensured by all involved stakeholders as this is key to continued strengthening of a good governance system.

Zambia News and Information Services reports that Mr. Kalunga said this in Kabompo when he addressed members during the district electoral conflict management committee planning meeting for the Chikenge ward by election.

“Let us ensure that even as we plan for this meeting that no major conflict shall arise from this election as peace and unity should always prevail as this is also the mandate of the conflict management committee,” Mr. Kalunga said.

He further commended the committee for appointing a female chairperson as this shows confidence and good will to allow women in high decision making positions.

And also speaking at the same event district conflict management committee chairperson Mervis Mulomba thanked the members for appointing her and promised to deliver as required.

“I am grateful for identifying me to be your chairperson and I believe that we shall together as a team deliver to ensure peaceful and credible elections,” Ms. Mulomba said.

Meanwhile giving a vote of thanks district United Party for national development (UPND) District Chairperson Joseph Chainda assured the committee of a free and fair and violence free by election as caderism was no longer condoned in this government.

“I can assure you that we shall experience a very peaceful election as you know UPND does not support or condone caderism, we shall equally support you,” Mr. Chainda said.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia has set Thursday, 2nd May, 2024 as the date on which to hold Ward by-election in Chikenge in Kabompo district of Northwestern province and other by elections across the country.

The Chikenge ward councillor seat fell vacant after the incumbent councillor Brinia Lumbala resigned from active politics after being offered employment in the civil service.
