An ex-freedom fighter in Solwezi District, North-Western Province has called on Zambians to honour the legacy of First Republican President Dr Kenneth Kaunda by upholding peace and unity.

Ex-freedom fighter George Kasito told ZANIS in an interview today that there is need to keep memories of the first Republican President alive.

He explained that Dr Kaunda was a noble leader who should be celebrated for his contribution  to the development of the country.

” I cannot express how grateful I am to have been among the people to witness the many milestones he attained to help the country be what it is today, ” he said.

Mr Kasito said Dr Kaunda was a beacon of peace and unity who helped  African countries such as Zimbabwe , Angola and South Africa get liberalized.

” Our leader will not only be remembered by Zambians but by other African countries and the world at large,” he noted

Mr Kasito said the peace and unity Zambians are enjoying should not be underestimated adding that freedom fighters struggled to make Zambia a peaceful and unified nation.

” It is sad to see people inciting tribalism in a country without thinking of the negative impact  it has,” he said

Mr Kasito has called on Zambians to uphold peace and unity in the country stating that maintaining  unity requires concerted efforts.

Meanwhile, the ex-freedom fighter also encouraged Zambians to take farming seriously adding that Dr Kaunda promoted agriculture.

Mr Kasito explained that because of the commitment of the first President in the agriculture sector the country was food secure.

” Back in the days it was rare to hear people being hungry because most of us ventured into farming,  this helped us feed our families,” he said.

Mr Kasito has commended President Hakainde Hichilema for following the footsteps of Dr Kenneth Kaunda’s in promoting agriculture among Zambians.

He added that various initiatives that are being promoted in the agriculture sector such as empowering people with agriculture loans is an indication of the President’s dedication to growing the sector.

He said with is need for stakeholders to come on board and compliment government’s efforts in addressing the drought situation being experienced in the country .

He said as a country celebrates  Kenneth Kaunda Day  on 28th April  there is need to reflect on the sacrifices and hard work made by KK and others and take a leaf from the dedication they had to better the livelihoods of Zambia.
